STANDARDS
Each maker of an Owner Produced Part that lists their part on this website will be required to provide certifications as to the suitability of that part for a particular purpose by complying with the following standards. Compliance with these standards will be shown with each listing so that a purchaser will know the producer has followed a process leading to a quality part.
The producer of an Owner Produced Part must demonstrate that the part has been engineered, using appropriate materials, with a process that is repeatable, and with quality control to be "of such a quality, that the condition of the aircraft, airframe, aircraft engine, propeller, or appliance worked on will be at least equal to its original or properly altered condition" (14 CFR 43.13(b)).
The Owner Produced Parts Association has identified four metrics used to make this determination.
Engineering - How was the engineering data determined?
Reverse Engineering - If the part was engineered using reverse engineering, the producer must declare:
- The method used to conduct the reverse engineering.
- The person who conducted the reverse engineering and the qualifications they possess.
- Original manufacturer engineering data - If using original manufacturer engineering data, a description of the drawing and how it can be accessed must be provided.
Materials - How was the material content and heat treatment determined for the original part?
- Third party testing - If a third party was used to determine the material content and heat treatment, the producer must declare:
- The chemical, mechanical, or other method used to determine the material content and heat treatment.
- The person who conducted the materials analysis and the qualifications they possess.
Original manufacturer engineering data - If using original manufacturer engineering data, a description of the drawing and how it can be accessed must be provided.
- If the material for the Owner Produced Part differs from the material on the original part, a data must be provided and data showing that the new part will perform in an equivalent way to the original part.
Process - What process was used in manufacturing the Owner Produced Part?
- Process - The producer must declare:
- What process was used (turning, forging, etc.) used to produce the part.
- If the process can be repeated or if each piece is custom manufactured
Quality Control - What quality control measures were used in producing the part?
- Quality Control - The producer must declare:
- What testing has been done to validate that the Owner Produced Part will perform equivalent to the original part.
- Dimensional quality
- Non-destructive testing
- Destructive testing
- In-service testing
- What testing has been done to validate that the Owner Produced Part will perform equivalent to the original part.
